As a composer, Fang-Chi strives to explore the timbres of different instruments and incorporate them into her works. She also tries to write for a variety of ensemble combinations. Many of her works have been performed across Asia, notably in Singapore and Taiwan. Her latest collaboration is a commission for her junior high school Da-Cheng String Ensemble. 

 

Fang-Chi (b. 1996) started composing at the age of 11. She won the First Prize of the Tauyuan Student Composition Competition in 2009 and the Fifth Prize of the National Student Composition Competition in 2010 in Taiwan. Before she was accepted into Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM), she presented her pieces regularly at school and held a public composition recital in 2013 with a full program of her works in Taiwan. Not only does she compose for contemporary music, Fang Chi also arranges music. In her high school graduation concert, her arrangement of the piece, Piazzolla V.S. Let it go which combines Piazzolla's Winter and Let it go from Disney movie Frozen was very well received. After she started studying at YSTCM, many of her pieces has been performed in the composition department recital at YST Orchestra Hall. Her new works include Soliloquy for Bassoon solo (2014), Passacaglia Op.1 for Viola and Cello (2014), Discovery for Brass trio and Vibraphone (2015). Her piece Diu Diu Dang Ah, scored for Chinese Orchestra was selected into a composer workshop held by Singapore Chinese Orchestra and premiered at the Singapore Conference Hall. Dawn II, scored for large ensemble was selected to be played in the concert ‘Spectrum Series – In View of Distant Lands’, the concert of the PAMS Summit at Singapore Esplanade Recital Studio and YSTCM orchestra hall in collaboration with YST New Music Ensemble and Ensemble Multilaterale, a French contemporary ensemble in a New Music concert. Metamorphosis for Piano solo (2016) was premiered at Cohen Davison Theatre, Peabody Conservatory. The arrangement of Bach Chaconne in d minor (2017), scored for string ensemble was premiered by Da-Cheng String Ensemble at the orchestra hall of Da-Cheng junior high school. 

 

Fang Chi is currently pursuing her Bachelor degree in Music Composition under the tutelage of A/P Ho Chee Kong at YSTCM of the National University of Singapore on full scholarship. She was also selected by the Conservatory to attend the exchange program at Peabody Institute under the tutelage of Dr. Amy Kirsten. Fang Chi has had her works presented in masterclasses and workshop by Diana Soh, Maria Grenfell, Amnon Wolman, Chihchun Shi-sun Lee and Jing Wen Zhao.
